Iron-On vs. Sew-On Patches: Making the Right Choice
Whether you need quick heat-press application for retail clothing line drops or rock-solid permanent sewing for workwear and uniforms, selecting the correct patch backing is essential for durability.
Iron-On (Heat Seal) Backing
Iron-on patches feature a specialized heat-activated poly-adhesive layer laminated to the rear of the patch. When heated with a commercial heat press or standard household iron at 320°F (160°C), the adhesive melts into the fabric fibers, creating a strong bond.
- Best For: Cotton, denim, canvas, polyester blends, and casual outerwear.
- Application Time: 15–20 seconds under firm pressure.
- Tip: Always sew around the perimeter if patches will undergo frequent industrial laundry washing.
Sew-On (Plain Backing)
Sew-on patches feature a soft twill or non-woven paper backing. They contain no adhesive and are sewn directly onto garments using standard thread.
- Best For: Leather motorcycle vests, nylon jackets, delicate silk/satin, and heavy workwear.
- Advantage: 100% immune to wash heat and dry cleaning chemicals; never peels or lifts.
